- Our Approach at Hainan’s MAS -
At Hainan’s Miniature American Shepherds, our goal is to breed beautiful, loving dogs who not only excel in dog sports but also thrive as cherished companions in a family home.
We are deeply committed to giving every puppy the very best start in life. From the very first week, we use Puppy Culture methods, including early neurological stimulation, to help build resilience and confidence. Raised in the heart of our family home, our puppies are gently exposed to the everyday sights, sounds, smells, and textures of daily life. This includes becoming accustomed to household appliances, different surfaces, and a variety of new experiences.
As they grow, we introduce early crate training and short periods of time away from their littermates to encourage independence. They experience baths, car travel, and even the natural world around them—our grounds include lakes where they safely encounter ducks, geese, and swans. Playtime with our adult dogs (we share our home with seven MAS!) also helps them learn good manners and appropriate social behaviours. From the beginning, we guide them in shaping polite habits—especially when it comes to what’s acceptable to chew!
Between 6–8 weeks of age, we begin recall training and continue to broaden their social experiences. Under normal circumstances, we welcome visitors of all ages to meet and interact with the puppies. When that isn’t possible, we make use of resources such as the Dog’s Trust “Sounds Sociable” soundtracks, ensuring they are still exposed to a variety of voices, clothing, and everyday noises.
As a veterinary professional, I personally handle and examine each puppy regularly, helping them become comfortable with being touched and checked over. This makes their first vet visits far less daunting and allows us to closely monitor their health and development throughout their time with us.
Most importantly, every puppy we raise is loved beyond measure. We only ever breed when we plan to keep a puppy ourselves, which means every litter is carefully planned and deeply valued. Our aim is always to raise confident, happy puppies who grow into well-rounded dogs that we are truly proud of.
