ABOUT THE BREED
|
The Miniature American Shepherd traces its roots back to the early 1960s, when the breed was first developed in the United States as a smaller version of the Australian Shepherd. Originally recognised as the Miniature Australian Shepherd (Mini Aussie), the breed was created to offer all the intelligence, loyalty, and strong work ethic of the Australian Shepherd, but in a more compact size—perfect as a versatile pastoral and companion dog.
In 2011, the breed gained formal recognition under the name Miniature American Shepherd, allowing it to be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a distinct breed. This change established the Miniature American Shepherd and Australian Shepherd as two separate breeds, with previously registered Mini Aussies eligible for re-registration as Miniature Americans. The Miniature American Shepherd stands between 14–18 inches (35–46 cm) at the withers. Accepted colours include black, blue merle, red, and red merle, with or without tan points, making each dog beautifully unique in appearance. Beyond their striking looks and working ability, MAS are beloved for their personality. They are intelligent, biddable, and eager to please, making them quick learners who thrive in a variety of activities—from agility and obedience to herding and therapy work. Loyal and affectionate with their families, they are known for forming strong bonds and often follow their people from room to room. Despite their energetic and playful nature, they are also deeply loving companions who enjoy quiet time and cuddles just as much as adventure. At Hainan’s Miniature American Shepherds, our focus is on breeding MAS with excellent temperaments, type, and working ability. We strive to produce dogs that not only excel in dog sports, but also adapt seamlessly into family life—bringing joy, love, and companionship to every home they join.
